A lot has changed for women’s rights and women’s movements. The rhetoric that you constantly hear in the news is consistently based in fear when now is the time to be proactive and solution-based. What is Empowerment Self-Defense and How is it Different from Martial Arts?

More traditional forms of self-defense, such as martial arts, both ancient and more modern Krav Maga-style methods, were developed by men, for male bodies. These types of trainings address the type of violence that is typically perpetrated by men against other men, such as hand-to-hand combat and violent crime.

While these methods can be highly effective for women as well as men, they require intensive and long-term training, and most importantly, they do not address many aspects of sexual and gender-based violence—which is completely different from typical male-on-male violence.

This training addresses the void with verbal communication and mental skills for violence prevention. Along with those areas it focuses on de-escalation, including assertive body language, boundary setting, and the making of informed choices to assess and possibly avoid violent situations. It additionally provides physical skills that are adapted specifically for sexual attacks, harnessing the strengths of women’s bodies and psyches and setting them against the weaknesses of the bodies and minds of their assailants.

"Women’s (Female-identifying) Self-Defense techniques in particular are designed to provide tactics and techniques that will be effective to a broad stretch of people in their efforts to survive a potential violent attack. Empowerment Self-Defense also works to address the vast majority of attacks perpetrated, which research shows originates with people familiar to the intended victims -- domestic partners, acquaintances, school or work peers, people with authority over the intended victim, etc." ~Lissette Fitzgerald, 5th Dan in Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do/ Tae Kwon Do, 2nd Dan in Aikido, and Instructor in Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts.
